Houston’s Trae Tha Truth is something of an enigma. On the one hand there’s his moniker, Asshole By Nature (ABN), the darker nature of his music: street music by all accounts, and the fact that he was banned from any airplay or mention on-air by the Radio One corporation for a battle of words with local station personalities some two years ago. Conversely, Trae was honored with his own day in the city of Houston (July 22nd – Trae Day) back in 2008; the first time this honor was bestowed upon a rap artist, by then-Mayor, Bill White, for his many acts of giving back to the community. He is also all set to open up an emergency children’s shelter on November 1st which will serve as a 3,000 square foot transitional center for children who find themselves in the system. Trae’s non–profit also goes by the ABN moniker although this time it stands for Angel By Nature. As I said, an enigma.
Musically Trae is both well known and underground. He can pick up the phone and call the likes of Lil Wayne, Rick Ross, Wiz Khalifa or Lupe Fiasco for an album feature and video, as proven by his most recent release, “Street King” which features all of the aforementioned and more yet would not be considered mainstream. Nonetheless, his name carries enough weight to fill a venue like Manhattan’s SOBs floor to ceiling and this upcoming 330 Ritch show is sure not to disappoint. Trae himself has a presence that will fill a room and he puts his heart and soul into every show.
